MOVING TO UNITED KINGDOM
The United Kingdom includes Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Scotland and are all subject to the same entry requirements and import laws.
Entry Requirements
Persons entering the United Kingdom must have a valid passport and in some cases a visa as well. In addition, a work permit issued by the department of employment is required for everyone who will be working there.
Customs Regulations
The person moving to the UK has to complete a customs C.3 form, which is obtainable from our office. This is completed at origin and returned to Amfreight International prior to your departure. The governing principle for importing household effects duty free is that they have been in your use and possession abroad for not less than six months before importation.
Alcohol
Travelers to the United Kingdom are allowed to bring in a certain amount of wine and spirits under a duty free concession. However, this does not apply to alcohol imported with your household effects. These are treated as a separate import, and are subject to duty and tax at the current rates. This can be very expensive and we recommend that you do not include in your household shipment.
Firearms
The United Kingdom custom regulations are extremely strict with regard to importing firearms or ammunition. You must obtain an import permit from the local police to bring in any kind of firearm, and its inclusion in your household shipment can cause delays. Handguns are strictly forbidden, and it is recommended you do not import firearms to the United Kingdom at all.
Cars and Motorcycles
Have to have been in your use and possession abroad for a period of at least six months to qualify for duty free importation, otherwise they are subject to duties and taxes at the current rate.
Pets
All pets have to be put into quarantine for a period of 6 months in government approved kennels. This quarantine is at the owners expense, and can be very costly. An import license is also required.
