MOVING TO GERMANY
Furniture, household and personal effects which the shipper and their family have owned and have used for at least 12 months before moving to Germany will normally qualify for duty free entry. New items are subject to customs duties and taxes based on their assessed value.
Entry Requirements
Foreigners planning to move to Germany must obtain a work permit from the local employment office where they are intending to live. In addition, a residence permit is required which can only be granted when a work permit is assured. Returning German Nationals will require written proof that they have resided outside Germany for at least one year preceding their move. Everyone must also register with the local authorities within one week of their arrival, even returning German Nationals.
Automobiles
Importation is permissible, provided shipper meets all requirements applicable for household effects. Six months prior ownership and usage is required. Registration certificate issued by German authorities must be obtained prior to release by customs. Once preliminary clearance has been granted by customs, the vehicle will then have to be checked by the T.U.V. (German Vehicle Safety Organization) before being released to owner.
Firearms
Importation is permissible. Permits and licenses required.
Pets
Dogs and cats must have a certificate of good health issued by a licensed Veterinarian, describing the animal and stating that the pet is free from rabies and any other contagious disease. They must also attest that no case or rabies has been recorded in a 21 km radius of the previous residence in the previous 90 days.
Restricted Articles
New articles must be declared and will be subject to duties and taxes at the discretion of customs authorities. Wines, Liquors, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products are assessed full duties and taxes. Small quantities of food and other consumer goods can be imported duty free.
